A Municipal Corporation is a statutory body established by the authority of Law. It's existence evidenced by a general or special charter, with a corporate name & with defined limits and population and with delegated powers of Local Govt. It is the upper most form of  the Municipal Organization and has more power, greater financial autonomy and wider functions as compared to other local urban bodies. The urban area of Asansol with an area of 127.237 sq.km. resembles all typical characteristics of a Metropolis and is considered the most important industrial and commercial city in West Bengal after Kolkata. Asansol, a centre of Railway Service, now turned into a Railway Division and making mining activities expanded day by day with growth of industrialisation in the surroundings. It is basically a city of cosmopolitan character.
